Language is simply, a medium of communication among humans. And it is no news that there are a lot of languages spoken by different people in the world. It is therefore estimated that there are about 7,000 human languages in the world. This just makes the world a beautiful place, you’d have to agree with me.

Such a huge figure should be a thing of happiness to our world, but it not. The rate at which some human languages go into extinction is alarming. It has been estimated that 50% to 90% of languages spoken will be extinct by 2100. Sad right? Yeah!

Today in this post, we will be looking at the top 10 most spoken languages in the world. These languages have a high number of people speaking them, making them the most widely spoken languages in the world. Another factor would be the high population of the country or tribe where the language is spoken.

Speakers – 199 million

Indonesia known to be the fourth most populous country in the world has its official language to be Indonesian. Due to their population, they are occupying the 10th position on our list, with an estimated 199 million speakers of the language. Indonesian is known to be one of the most spoken languages in the world due to its large population. Due to its wide use, Indonesian has grown in learning by non-indonesians over the years. It is now offered as a course in major universities.

It is worthy to mention that the language Indonesian, was created from several other languages that the country shared ties with year’s back. Some include; Dutch, Asian with Chinese being the biggest contributor from that continent, Sanskrit, Tamil,  Prakrit, and Hindi. Speakers – 234 million

The number nine most spoken language in the world takes us to Portugal, where the official language is Portuguese. With an estimated amount of 234 million speakers, Portuguese is known to be the 3rd most spoken European language in the world. Portuguese is also widely spoken in many African countries.

Due to colonization, Portuguese is spoken by many countries in the world. It is known to be the official language of Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde,  Mozambique Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé, Príncipe, and famous Brazil. Portuguese is known to be one of the world’s romance languages and can be studied as a course in major universities around the world.

Speakers – 258 million

8th on our list of top 10 most spoken languages in the world is Russian, known to be the official language of Russia,  Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan. In 2013, Russian was announced to be the second most used internet language, after the almighty English language. With a high 258 million speakers around the globe, Russian Is sure one of the most spoken languages in the world.

Russian is known to be the 6th most used language on the list of 1000 most used online languages. It boasts of wide use on the internet. The language is known to be a very intelligent one, as its creator was highly intelligent also. Russian has an estimated 200,000 words, making it very tricky and intelligent to learn. Due to it popularity, Russian can be studied in universities around the world.

Speakers – 265 million

Never heard of the Bangla Language? Well, it the language is spoken in the Bengal region of India, known to be the lingua franca of the Bengalis people of India and Bangladesh. Due to it 265 million speakers around the world, Bangla is the 7th most spoken language in the world in 2023.

Indian being the second-most populous country in the world has an official 22 scheduled languages with Bangla being the second most used after Hindu. Bangla has an official 37 million second-language speakers, making it very widely used. Bangla still hold the title of being the 5th most spoken native language in the world.

Speakers – 274 million

Arabic isn’t only one of the most spoken languages but also very popular because it is the official language of the Islamic Religion. With 274 million speakers Arabic is the official language of the Arab world. And is the 6th most spoken language in the world 2023. And was subsequently named after the Arab. Arabic has a wide influence on Islamic countries all over the world because it is the official language of the Quran.

The Arabic language is also known to be a big influencer on other languages, the most popular one being the English language. Some English words that were connoted from Arabic include words like admiral, alchemy, alcohol, algebra, algorithm, alkaline, almanac, amber, arsenal, assassin, candy, carat, cipher, coffee, cotton, ghoul, hazard, jar, kismet, lemon, loofah, magazine, mattress, sherbet, sofa, sumac, tariff, and zenith.

Occupying the 5th position on our post of top 10 most spoken language in the world 2023 is the French Language, with an estimated 280 million speakers spread across the globe. Known to be a romance language of the great Indo-European family, the language is said to have originated from the Roman empire. Due to it colonial exploits, there are now several French-speaking countries in the world, mostly in the African Continent.

A French-speaking country or person is officially called or referred to as Francophone. French is known to be the official language of 29 countries in every continent of the world. French is the second most studied language in the world as of 2023 with approximately 120 million learners of the language after the English language. Due to that statistics, the French language is a major course of study in universities around the world.

  1. Spanish

Speakers – 534 million

4th on our list of top 10 most spoken languages in the world is another Romance Language, called Spanish. Spanish is known to have originated from the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. Spanish has the record of being the world’s second most native spoken language, with Chinese being the first.

As with other languages on this list, Spanish language creation was influenced by other languages including Latin, Italian, Sardinian, and Arabic. Other minor languages have also been an influencer of the Spanish language. Spanish is known to be the official language of the European Union, and officially the third most used language on the internet.

  1. Hindi

Speakers – 615 million

Another Indian language on our list. You’d have to agree with it because of their population. Really nice country. Hindi modernly called Hindu is the an Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in India. With an estimated 615 million speakers, Hindi is the third most spoken language in the world 2023. As mentioned earlier in the Bangla language, India officially has 22 scheduled languages and Hindi is one of the 22 languages.

It worthy to mention that there are other subsidiaries of the Hindi language but are not regarded as Originals. These include Caribbean and Fiji Hindi. Hindi has been officially known to be the fourth most-spoken first language in the world. And of course the third most spoken language in the world.

Speakers – 1,117 billion

When there’s a list that deals with the population, there’s no leaving china out of it. With a massive 1,117 million speakers all around the world, the Mandarin Chinese language is the second most spoken language in the world. It is mostly spoken in the northern and southwestern parts of China. Mandarin Chinese was originally originated from the northern part of China and hence, the speakers were called northern Chinese. First on our list of top 10 most spoken languages in the world, with an estimated 1,132 million speakers, is no other than the English Language. Yes, you heard right! The English language is the most spoken language in the world. English is known to be a west German language first spoken in the Great Britain, England. As with some other languages on the list such as Portuguese and French, the English language also became widely spread and used because of the colonial exploits from England and the united states.

English is known to be the largest language by it number of speakers, and officially the third most-spoken native language besides Chinese and Spanish respectively. The English language was greatly influenced by German, Dutch, and Frisian. English Language is the first most learned language in the world and had an estimated 2 billion speakers around the globe. That’s an incredible figure you’d agree with me! The English language can also be studied in universities across the world.
